New Music? For What? DOOM???

Posted on 2021-05-05 Written by D. Lee Jackson 2 Comments

Doom LogoA while back, I teased that I’d written three new songs over the past few weeks, and that you’d have to stay tuned to find out what they were for. Well, the song count is up to five, and I can now disclose the projects (yes, plural) that they’re for.

They’re for Doom user projects. (*GASP!*)

Yes, I’ve become involved in writing music – vanilla General MIDI files, to be specific – for a couple of Doom user projects over on Doomworld. It’s a departure from my Apogee/3D Realms-only history, but I figure there’s no harm in spreading out every now and then. Besides, it’s purely volunteer work, and I’m not violating any contracts or copyrights by doing it.

I was initially approached by user Cammy to volunteer for a “TNT: Evilution MIDI Pack” that he was spearheading. He convinced me, and I got to work. In the end, I wound up writing three songs for that pack.

Cammy further urged me to join the Doomworld community, which I did. There I learned of another MIDI project: the “Ultimate MIDI Pack – A community music replacement for the original Doom.” I jumped on that bandwagon, asking user and project leader northivanastan if I could write songs for levels E4M4 and E4M3, in that order. He gave his permission, and I completed both songs just recently.

The “TNT: Evilution MIDI Pack” won’t be released until June 17th of this year, so you’re going to have to wait a little while to hear the three songs I did for it. You can follow its progress if you join Doomworld and watch this thread.

The Ultimate MIDI Pack songs have already been released in increments, so you can log onto its thread and listen to my two contributions, “Vitamin B6” and “Ant Farm Melee,” at this link. Just download the latest .ZIP file release from the thread and look for the songs for E4M3 and E4M4.

Keep in mind that these are plain General MIDI files, and will only sound as good as the General MIDI device you have on which to play them back. I’ve tried to optimize them for the bog standard Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, but I wrote them using the Mighty Roland SC-88Pro. I hope you have a good GM synth for purposes of playback.

Thanks for listening!

Radiation LogoI’ve gone to the Wayback Machine and retrieved an old post I made back in 2000 about an old classic – Grabbag. The post comes from the old 3d Realms Ultimate Bulletin Board, and it’s very in-depth about the song and the circumstances that led to its creation. The only thing it lacks is a musical analysis, but if things keep going the way they are on the Lee Jackson Audio Community Discussion Group on Facebook, you may find that coming up this weekend.

I hope you’ll enjoy the read!

One Giant Leap For “Derivations”

Posted on 2020-02-11 Written by D. Lee Jackson Leave a Comment

music-score-mouseA major milestone has been met in the production of my upcoming second album, Derivations. I’ve finished primary composition of all ten tracks for the album! That happened a couple of days ago, and I put what I believe are the final tweaks into place this afternoon. I still have fades and mastering left to do, plus I have to master the tracks separately for streaming services (Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, etc.),  so the release is not ready, but it’s massively closer to completion.

One aspect that I will need to take care of is album cover design. I want to have a CD cover done that is “derived” from the Calibrations artwork. With this, I could use your help, fair readers. Who would you recommend that can handle the entire CD Baby submission package from their templates? That includes the cover, the liner notes, the CD label, and the back cover? My budget for this is flexible. If you know anyone (I’ve already checked Fiverr), please contact me via the comments section. Thanks!

In other news, NotCon at Sea is coming up on Monday, February 17th! We’ll be driving to Galveston the day before, so I’ll probably create a test CD of Derivations to see how it works in the car stereo. I expect that it won’t work on the first pass; if it does, it’ll be a miracle. (My wife and I will also be practicing our karaoke selections for the final night of the cruise Karaoke Party during the drive.)

Stay tuned here for more Derivations news!

New Album Coming in 2020 – “Derivations”

Posted on 2020-02-01 Written by D. Lee Jackson Leave a Comment

CDSeamlessAlmost two years after the publication of my first album, Calibrations, I am now ready to announce the upcoming release of my second album, Derivations.

Dictionary.com defines “Derivation” as:

  1. the act or fact of deriving or of being derived.
  2. the process of deriving.
  3. the source from which something is derived; origin.
  4. something that is or has been derived; derivative.

I see Derivations as an extension of Calibrations, with Calibrations being the source.

When finished, Derivations will contain ten tracks (I’ve got eight in the bag now and am working on number nine), including the previously-released single, “What It Shall Be.” The completed album will be released for physical CD and streaming distribution via CD Baby. Later, high-resolution versions of almost all of the tracks (more on this as the release date approaches) will be released via the Bandcamp service.

The CD will be released prior to the end of 2020 (with any luck, significantly prior to the end of 2020). Watch for updates and further announcements!
