About the Premiere
The San Antonio Community Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Albert Aguilar, will present the world premiere of Elegy 137 on October 25th, 2026, at Texas A&M University–San Antonio.
About the Dedication
The dedication of Elegy 137 reads: “For those lost in the Central Texas flooding disaster, July 4th weekend, 2025.”
At last count, 137 people died in the flooding, and two people remain missing. The work reflects the calm before the storm, the devastation that followed, and a solemn remembrance of those who were lost.
Program Note
Elegy 137 is built around three emotional pillars: stillness, rupture, and reflection. The opening section evokes the quiet stability of a summer evening before the storm. As the music unfolds, the texture fractures into jagged, unsettled gestures representing the sudden and overwhelming force of the flood. The final section turns inward, offering a restrained, contemplative space for memory and mourning.
Composer Statement
“I wrote this work to honor the people whose lives were lost during the 2025 Central Texas floods. As I followed the news coverage and the stories of families affected, I felt compelled to respond in the way I know best – through music. Elegy 137 reflects the calm before the storm, the devastation that followed, and a solemn remembrance of those who were lost.”
– Lee Jackson, Composer
Conductor Statement
“As a musician and educator in San Antonio, the tragedy of the Central Texas floods feels painfully close to home. Families and communities just a short distance from us have experienced unimaginable loss. As I prepare to conduct ‘Elegy 137,’ I find myself thinking about those whose lives were lost, the loved ones who continue to grieve, and the strength it will take for these communities to heal.
“Its themes of remembrance, sorrow, and hope have taken on an especially personal meaning, not only for me but for our musicians. SACWE’s world premiere performance will be offered in a spirit of compassion — as a musical space to grieve, to remember, and to stand with our neighbors throughout Central Texas.”
