Being Nasty to the Good
by Lee Jackson
My main character
is about to have
something bad
done to them.
What did he do
to deserve this?
He was a good kid
and has tried
to live a good life.
Yet, here he is,
knowing what will happen,
but not knowing exactly
how bad it will be.
Novel writing pushes
your own moral standards.
You have to be willing
to be very nasty
to someone you like.
Does this mean
that writing
turns you into
a sociopath?
Who is the real loser here?
The character
or the writer?

Event of a Lifetime
by Lee Jackson
The writer prepares
to put his main character
through a crucial point
in his life
Where both will be tested
to the limits
of their abilities.
Does the character know
what will happen?
Does the writer know
what will happen?
The words seem to crawl
from another reality
into this one
Documenting every step
Every strength
Every flaw
of a person who does not exist.
But how can that happen?
The writer is self-aware.
The character is self-aware.
Who has the right to say
which one is real?

Plot and Sub-Plot
by Lee Jackson
The writer’s main character
has survived his first
real test
Only to learn
that he is part
of something much bigger
than he realized.
He is not yet ready
to be part
of the secret
Yet he knows
he will be headed
in that direction
very soon.
What lies ahead
could affect
all of humanity
If those who share the secret
are to be trusted.
The writer must test himself
as hard as he tests
his main character.
Is either one up to the job?
Only words will tell.
