I’ve been forced to switch gears in my music project. Instead of using just my trusty Roland SC-88 Pro, I’m also trying to use software synths (e.g., NI Komplete 10, Cakewalk VSTi synths, etc.). However, I have run into a couple of major problems with my sound device and its drivers. They don’t seem to want to allow Cakewalk Sonar Platinum, Komplete, the Arturia Keylab 88, Adobe Audition, and my other software to talk to each other. I believe the culprit to be the ASIO driver implementation for my ancient Lexicon Omega USB 1.1 audio device. Activating ASIO causes everything to just clam up—no sound whatsoever. I’ve spent days trying to get this fixed, following every instruction online to the letter. No joy.
Enough is enough, I figured. I got on the phone today and talked to my Sweetwater representative.
After I managed to explain the problem and have it understood, he suggested a reasonably-priced replacement for my Lexicon: a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. It’s a more modern interface (USB 2.0), and supposedly has better ASIO support. It’s only a two-in/two-out device, but that’s all I need—all of my hardware comes in through a Mackie 12-channel mixer’s main 2-channel bus, and my computer sound is supposed to go out via the two outputs to an Adam audio monitor setup. Plain and simple, and inexpensive to boot. Just $149.99 out the door, and it should arrive by Saturday.
Cross your fingers for me, please. I really, REALLY need all the luck I can get right now.
